Owen Lane Could Make Rapid Recovery In Time For Cardiff Blues . . . And Wales

Wales hopeful Owen Lane could make a rapid recovery from the injury that saw him limp off during the final moments of Cardiff Blues’ dramatic victory in Lyon.

The Blues wing appeared to have pulled a hamstring close to the end of his team’s stunning 30-21 victory in France and appeared to be facing a long lay-off.

But 20-year-old Lane – who is a contender for a Wales wing spot in the autumn series – could feature for the Blues in their next Heineken Champions Cup tie at home to Glasgow Warriors on Sunday.

Blues coach John Mulvihill said: “Owen’s injury was more cramp than anything else.

“He is moving quite freely and we’ve got a few bumps and bruises. We’re not training until Tuesday, but we’ll be assessing some boys on Monday.”

Lane – who scored two tries in the Blues’ recent derby Guinness Pro 14 victory over the Dragons – is likely to be named in the Wales squad due to be announced by coach Warren Gatland on Tuesday.

But his current focus will be on his region this weekend as the Blues bid to back up their victory in France against the Warriors, who lost 13-3 at home to Saracens on Sunday.

Mulvihill was proud of his side’s effort at Stade de Gerland, but insists they must maintain the momentum at the Arms Park in order to continue their fight for a place in the knockout stages.

“It’s a great result for us and hopefully it means we can pack out Cardiff Arms Park next Sunday when Glasgow visit because that’s going to be another big game for us. Hopefully,we can build on this win,” said Mulvihill.

“We talked about our return to the Champions Cup a lot in the build-up to the game and it was a big focus for us. We want to do this competition proud.

“It means a lot to us to play against the best teams in Europe and this is a fantastic tournament. The physicality of the games is huge and we stood up to that.”
