Wrexham Dreaming With EFL Return Within Reach

Wrexham are still dreaming of a Football League return under manager Bryan Hughes.

The Dragons have been playing in the fifth tier for more than a decade, but have qualified for the Vanarama National League play-offs.

They will finished fourth or fifth and face Harrogate or Eastleigh in their opening play-offs fixture.

Ironically, Wrexham’s final regular season match this Saturday is against Harrogate at the Racecourse and player James Jennings says: “It’s between us and Fylde for the fourth spot. We have belief, drive and determination going into our final League game and are fired up for the play-offs.

“We’ll be ready for Harrogate this Saturday and raring to go.”

Wrexham were relegated from the Football League in 2008, ending an 87-year stay in the Football League.

“If we win our remaining matches Wrexham will be promoted,” said manager Hughes. “That’s the belief I want to get into the players minds. There is positivity around the place.

“We could face Harrogate in the play-offs, but if we win against them this weekend it will be Eastleigh.

“I want the players to perform with confidence and see who play in the quarter-finals.”

Wrexham lost 2-1 at Halifax in their last outing, going down to a late Devante Rodney goal, scored during injury time, after a Jennings effort was disallowed.

“We were dominant for large spells, especially in the second half,” said Jennings. “We got in areas to exploit Halifax and went for it.

“It was Gung Ho and perhaps we left ourselves a little exposed, but we were encouraged to push on and fancied we could win it.

“My effort was definitely over the line. It was a great ball in from Robbo (Kevin Roberts) and I attacked it at the back post/ Their goalkeeper was a yard over the line and I went off to celebrate, but the referee didn’t give it.”

Chris Holroyd, who scored Wrexham’s goal, also felt Jennings’ had scored, saying: “It looked over the line and if that had been awarded it would have been a different game.

“But we were hit by a sucker punch.

“A home tie in the play-offs, which we have secured, is massive for us. We wanted one game and then a Wembley appearance in the final, but it’s not going to be that way.”

Almost 1,200 Dragons’ supporters followed their team to Halifax and Holroyd said: “The support was fantastic. They really lift the team and we need more of the same in the play-offs.”
