‘My Brilliant Newport Boys Will Deliver’ Says Manager Mike Flynn

Manager Mike Flynn believes his Newport County players will deliver the win they need against Notts County at Rodney Parade on Saturday (5.30pm).

Victory will ensure Football League survival and Newport-born Flynn says: “It’s going to be horrendous, it’s going to be nerve-wracking.

“But I really think the boys are going to deliver because they’ve been brilliant.

“I can’t ask for much more so I’m quietly confident but it will be a stressful time.

“We’ve had some unbelievably tough games considering the league and position we were in but they’ve answered everything and every time we’ve lost, we’ve had a good response so I’m hoping we’ll get one on Saturday.

“If we win, it’s going to be the biggest party in Newport for a long time.”

County are 22nd in League Two, two points in front of second-from-bottom Hartlepool United, who are in the final relegation place with one game to go.

A win will ensure the Exiles remain in League Two, but anything less and Pools, who have a better goal difference, could jump above them. The Durham club are at home against Doncaster Rovers, who are second in the table and could yet win the title.

“I’m not going to pull any punches or dress it up, it is the biggest game for so many reasons,” says Flynn. “It means so much to the club and amazing fans and to me.”

Newport lost 2-1 at Carlisle United on Saturday, while Hartlepool slipped up 1-0 at Cheltenham Town.

Bottom club Leyton Orient are certain to be relegated and either Newport or Hartlepool will join them in non-League football.

County are set to give Lenell John-Lewis his first start of the season in attack. He has been out since before the first match last August with a knee injury, but he went on from the subs bench at Carlisle.

“Lennell has been on fire in training,” says Flynn, who could be without Alex Samuel and Mark Randall. Both players were hurt in the last game, Samuel suffering a hamstring strain and Randall taking a blow to his ribs.

All League Two fixtures will kick-off at 5.30pm on Saturday.
