Devils Centre Layne On Target To Hit Century Mark

Canadian centre Layne Ulmer makes a landmark appearance for Cardiff Devils in Saturday’s Elite League home clash with Dundee Stars.

Ulmer will hit the 100 mark when he skates out against Stars at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay (7pm).

The hugely talented forward from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, a former Ottawa Senators NHL draft pick, has played 98 times for Devils in all competitions and has been a major hit for the Welsh club.

Ulmer scored twice in Devils 6-4 home win against Braehead Clan in their last League fixture and head coach Andrew Lord said: “He’s so crafty out there.

“Layne could have scored four or five tip-in goals against Braehead. His hand/eye coordination is unbelievable and he reads the game beautifully.

“Layne and Mo (captain Jake Moissette) really lead us on the ice. That leadership is massive for our team.”

Ulmer plays against Braehead Clan in Glasgow this evening (Friday) and Stars at home tomorrow.

While Ulmer closes in on his appearance century, fellow Devils centre Joey Martin needs two goals to take his total to 100.

Goal celebration time for Cardiff Devils.

Cardiff are unbeaten in eight matches, winning seven and drawing their Challenge Cup first leg tie at Guildford 3-3, and stand top of Elite League.

Only four points separate the top four teams with Devils ahead of Belfast, Nottingham and Guildford.

Clan are dangerous opponents having led 3-1 in their last two matches before going down and Devils dare not take them lightly.

Big defenceman Mark Louis has returned for Cardiff after recovering from injury and Lord has a selection decision to make.

Paul Crowder and Josh Batch are again doubtful, while Craig Moore won’t return until 2018.

Coach Lord has been on the bench for two of the last three fixtures and is likely to be wearing a suit at Braehead’s arena.
