County Dream Of Sell-Out Attendance For Cup Tie

Newport County are close to a sell-out attendance of 8,000 for their Emirates FA Cup clash with Championship club Leeds United on Sunday.

More than 6,500 tickets have already been sold and sales will end at 7pm on Friday.

The third round tie on Sunday (Noon kick-off) is all ticket and County goals ace Padraig Amond says: “It’s going to be brilliant.

“When Rodney Parade is full there is a lot of noise and atmosphere. We experienced that in the closing stages last season.”

Amond had netted nine times for Newport this season and the Exiles also have 10-goal Shawn McCoulsky available for the match against Leeds.

McCoulsky, 20, has extended his loan from Bristol City until the end of this season, while Paul Hayes is also available. He signed for Newport last October as a free agent, but his registration with Newport could not be ratified until the January transfer window opened.

Aaron Williams and Jazzi Barnum-Bobb returned to Newport from their loan spells at Brackley and Torquay United respectively, while Joe Quigley has returned to AFC Bournemouth at the end of his loan.

Irishman Amond, 29, says the County players are relishing their cup tie against Leeds.

He was a spectator at Newport’s Carabao Cup tie against Leeds at Elland Road when the Yorkshire club won 5-1.

“I was at the game to meet everybody,” says Amond. “It was a fantastic team performance should never have been 5-1. It probably should have been 5-5 maybe and I was excited by what I saw.

“Leeds are going to be tough to beat, but it’s a great tie for our club.

Emirates FA Cup third round ties are played this weekend.

“They are a massive club, always have been in England, and they are going to bring a lot of vocal fans.

“It’s going to be a brilliant day. When this place is full out can suck a goal in at any stage.

“It’s a game we are really looking forward to and the FA Cup is made for scalps. Let’s hope it’s us on Sunday.

“It’s a free shot really because there’s no pressure on us. Any pressure is on Leeds.”

Manager Michael Flynn is also set to strengthen his squad as he prepares his players for their cup test. He hopes to add extra quality for the second half of their season.
