Flynn’s Exiles Hit The Road To Unbeaten Forest Green

Newport County AFC travel 50 miles to Gloucestershire for their League Two clash with Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn, Nailsworth (3pm).

Rovers are unbeaten this season, while County could go top if they beat their hosts in what is effectively at Severnside derby.

Forest Green are one of five teams in the top two divisions still unbeaten – alongside Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Portsmouth – although they have drawn seven of their 11 fixtures.

That record puts manager Mark Cooper in an exclusive group with Pep Guardiola, Maurizio Sarri, Jurgen Klopp, Kenny Jackett.

More than 800 County fans are expected to be at the match and tickets can be bought at the New Lawn up to kick-off.

“We’ll have a lot of fans there because it’s quite local so I’m looking forward to the atmosphere,” says manager Michael Flynn (see manager of the month feature link at foot of page).

“It was a brilliant atmosphere last season. It’s always good when you’re winning 4-0 but from the offset it was brilliant.

“And I remember when I played there as well – the crowd really get going on that side of the pitch.

“It’s a small ground and it’s not very often that the away fans make more noise than the home fans but this is one of those stadiums where it can happen.

“We want to put a show on for our fans and keep our run going and get as many points as we can on the board.”

Charlie Cooper, who is on loan from Forest Green, is ineligible for this match with Robbie Willmott likely to to step in after completing a three-match suspension.

Mark O’Brien is ruled out by a hamstring problem, while Matty Dolan and Andrew Crofts are doubtful.

“Charlie will miss out and it’s a shame because I thought in the second half on Tuesday (3-3 v Macclesfield) he looked a lot better than he had been doing.

“It was a big improvement and that’s good for his confidence, but it’s hard now that he’s going to miss this one.

“We’re a small squad and we are going to pick up injuries and suspensions. Everybody will have a chance.

“With Cooper out we’d be really struggling on Saturday if Robbie wasn’t back.”

Newport County, possible: Day, Forbes, Demetriou (capt), Franks, Butler, Bennett, Bakinson, Willmott, Semenyo, Matt, Amond.
