Swans Could Still Drop Warns Guidolin

Francesco Guidolin has warned his Swansea City team they could still be relegated.

The Italian was unimpressed by the side’s 3-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday which has left them still mathematically vulnerable to the drop.

The result leaves the Swans on 40 points – now 10 points above the relegation zone with four games left to play, but all against sides in the top eight.

They visit Premier League leaders Leicester City next week, followed by Liverpool at home and then West Ham away, before finishing their campaign against Manchester City at the Liberty Stadium.

“We have spoken and we need some points,” Guidolin admitted.

“I don’t know if we need one, two or three, but we need points to be safe and for this season. We have to stay focused every day and every week.”

The result at St James’ Park could have been different had Swansea not missed several second-half chances.

Ashley Williams, Jefferson Montero and Bafetimbi Gomis all spurned good opportunities to equalise with the visitors trailing 1-0.

“If we had scored, the match could have been different,” said Guidolin. “But this is football. I think the result was harsh for us.

“Newcastle deserved to win, they were focused and played with intensity, but in the second half we had some chances to score that maybe in another match we would have taken. At the end, they won 3-0 and I hope this is only a bad day.”

Two of Newcastle’s goals came from set pieces – an area where the Swans have been more vulnerable this season than any other team in the Premier League.

Guidolin added: “I have to work with my assistant and staff and players for the future, because this is an important situation in the Premier League.”
