Aberystwyth have taken another step towards safety after Craig Hobson fired them to a vital win against Prestatyn.

Hobson netted after just four minutes to ease Aberystwyth’s relegation worries.

The victory pulls Aberystwyth eight points clear of 11th placed Carmarthen Town, whose own survival hopes are dependent on them winning each of their final three games.

Already relegated Prestatyn stubbornly kept themselves in the game and a late penalty save from goalkeeper Carl Jones denied Aberystwyth a second.

Aberystwyth threatened to add to their lead when Malcom Melvin twice went close and John Owen clipped the post as the visitors started brightly.

Hobson almost added a second when he connected with Declan Walker’s cross, but his header shaved the post.

Walker then had the chance to extend Aber’s lead from the penalty spot after Joe Phillips was brought down inside the area. Carl Jones was equal to Walker’s strike however, saving low down to his right to thwart the right back.

The New Saints ran out comfortable 4-1 winner’s against Bala Town.

Ryan Brobbel scored twice and Greg Draper netted his 20th goal of the season as Bala’s poor end of season form continued with Lakesiders slumping to a fourth straight league defeat.
