Evans Returns For Wales Women’s Italian Job

Former captain Tina Evans makes her Wales comeback on Thursday at the start of the test series against Italy in Rome.

The 75-cap ace will bring a wealth of experience to the squad ahead of a busy international calendar over the summer months.

Evans has been absent for three years to focus on her career as an IT Consultant, but has been tempted back by the prospect of World League and competing at a home EuroHockey Championships next summer.

“I took a break from hockey to establish a career for myself,” said Evans, ahead of her return under new coach Kevin Johnson.

“The forthcoming programme for Wales is a really exciting one and Kevin’s coaching approach interested me.

“It’s an exciting time for us as we head into World League Round 1, hopefully we’ll progress to Round 2, and then also having European’s in Cardiff next summer was a big draw for me.”

Evans took a complete break from hockey in 2014, before returning to the club scene.

She currently plays for England Hockey League Premiership side the University of Birmingham.

But having earned her selection for the three tests against Italy, she is now looking forward to making her return to the pitch for Wales.

“It is the loveliest thing to stand with your team mates and listen to the national anthem, and I’m really excited to be back,” added Evans, who made her debut in 2005.

“It was an honour to captain Wales for a number of years and to step back on the pitch for Wales this week is going to take me back years.

“There is a really positive atmosphere in the camp at the moment. The squad has completed a good block of training and we’re looking forward to testing ourselves against Italy under Kev’s guidance.”

Johnson became Wales Head Coach earlier this year and the series against Italy will be his first in charge.

Wales will also face the hosts on Saturday and Sunday.
