Ex-Bluebirds ‘Keeper Lee Beaten By Shaun’s Stunner

Man of the match Shaun Pearson headed the goal which extended Wrexham’s unbeaten run to 15 Vanarama National League fixtures.

The Dragons are fourth and in the hunt to earn a play-offs spot.

They won 1-0 against Maidstone United at the Racecourse, a crucial victory in manager Andy Davies’ first home game in charge of the team.

Scott Quigley hit the bar, while captain Pearson headed the Welsh club in front with 15 minutes left. The Reds had the better of chances throughout and a set piece proved the difference in what was a close, tense encounter.

“We need to score more goals from set pieces and thankfully it happened today,” said Pearson.

Victory saw Wrexham climb to fourth in the National League standings with seven games remaining. Their next match is against Bromley away next Friday (3pm).

Quigley, typically direct and combative, was picked out by Marcus Kelly, but saw his left footed effort saved by Maidstone goalkeeper Lee Worgan.

Former Wales under-21 international Worgan denied Wrexham time and again. The former Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff City goalkeeper, who played for the Bluebirds at the same time as Neil Alexander, Martyn Margetson and Tony Warner, was at his best.

He proved the difference in the early stages, denying Quigley and Pearson with outstanding saves.

Wrexham started the second half in dominant form and Pearson twice led appeals for a penalty as the Reds looked for a breakthrough.

The ‘Stones should have taken the lead on 53 minutes when Alex Wynter had an outstanding chance, but sent his header over the bar.

Five minutes later Maidstone wasted an even better chance, Blair Turgott firing over the bar having looked set to tap into an empty net.

Wrexham went ahead after 75 minutes when Pearson headed home from a Marcus Kelly free-kick.
