Guidolin Wants To Carry On At Swansea Despite Job Pressures

Francesco Guidolin has insisted he will not quit as Swansea boss despite admitting trying to save the club from relegation had made him ill.

The Swans chief will not be in the dug-out for Saturday’s game at Bournemouth after doctors advised him he needed more time to rest.

But the Italian, who was released from hospital on Monday after five days following a chest infection, says he will not walk away from the club.

Guidolin, 60, said: “I’m better now.

“But in the last two months my life has changed a lot. My life, my job, the language, but I was giving 150per cent of my life to do the best job to try and help save the team.

“After I spoke to the chairman, I felt the responsibility to save the team. After 50 days my body said ‘Stop Francesco’.

“I have finished my antibiotics but it is better for me to relax for a few more days and next week I can work with my team. But for now I need to rest.

“For the match against Aston Villa I hope and I think that, yes, I will be back.

“I am this way, I must always be 150per cent. I think about my job 24 hours a day, this is not a good idea sometimes because there are times you have to relax.

“But this is not my attitude or way of life. I don’t think I will change, maybe I have to but it is not easy because I am not young.”

Guidolin’s contract runs out at the end of the season but he wants to carry on despite the health scare and the fact he had stress issues when at Udinese two years ago.

He added: “My future is here because I have a contract for this season.

“I am happy to be here and if there is the possibility to stay here a long time, but right now it is not important.”

Guidolin missed the wins against Arsenal and Norwich after being told to go to hospital having been unwell before the match at Tottenham.

He has been back at the club this week but has not taken training though he will pick the team for the game at the Vitality Stadium.

Club stalwart Alan Curtis will again take charge as he did for the last two wins which have taken the Swans nine points above the drop zone and to the cusp of safety.

He added: “Alan is my friend, he is the perfect person, we see football in the same way and he is important for me and the club, important for Swansea fans and the feeling is perfect between us.

“I work with my assistant, Alan and players every day now but it is not possible for me to go back out to the pitch.

“But the important thing in this period is our position in the table. We had two important victories against Arsenal and Norwich.

“It is not enough, it is not finished. I want more. I know our team is a good team and we can do better and we can finish the season very well.

“The Premier League is difficult and we cannot be sure, but the table is looking better and is important.

“When I arrived in Swansea we had two points more than the teams in the relegation zone, now it is nine.

“But it is not enough. I want to see my team play well Saturday and for the remaining matches this season.”
