Swansea City have sent midfielder Jay Fulton out on loan to Wigan as manager Carlos Carvalhal insists new players will arrive once they realise other options are running out.

The 23-year-old Fulton, who has made 19 Premier League appearances for the Swans, has joined the Sky Bet League One leaders until the end of the season after passing a medical.

The former Falkirk player joins James Vaughan and Jamie Walker through the door at the DW Stadium this month.

Wigan boss Paul Cook told the club’s official website: “Jay will fit right in here.

“It is a good move for him and we are really looking forward to working with him and integrating him into our squad.”

Fulton could make his debut on Saturday against West Ham in the FA Cup, while Wigan visit Rochdale on Tuesday in the league.

Swansea have yet to make a January addition despite their perilous position at the foot of the Premier League table.

But speaking ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at Notts County, manager Carvalhal believes that will change in the final days of the window as players keen to move will re-examine their options.

Clubs like us expect more that we can bring good players in the last days,’ Carvalhal said.

‘I don’t say this happy or smiling, but I am talking about the reality.

‘I say that because in the beginning of the transfer window the players want to go to big clubs not in the relegation position.

‘In the last days they are nervous because they don’t achieve something they expected.

‘So in this moment our club can bring in really good players. We want the players before, of course, but in reality the market is completely different – so let’s see if we can bring them in.’

Swansea have pushed to sign Atletico Madrid forward Nicolas Gaitan and West Ham’s Andre Ayew, their former striker who spent a successful campaign at the Liberty Stadium in the 2015-16 season.

Ayew scored 12 goals in 34 league games before joining West Ham for £20.5million, but Swansea would like to reunite the Ghanaian with his brother and former Marseille colleague Jordan.

While talks continue over possible targets, Scottish midfielder Jay Fulton is set to join Wigan on loan until the end of the season.

Swansea remain bottom of the Premier League with 14 games left to play.

But Carvalhal has taken seven points from 12 since succeeding Paul Clement last month, and Monday’s 1-0 victory against Liverpool emphasised the greater organisation and spirit that the Portuguese has appeared to instil at Swansea.

The three points was important to us,’ Carvalhal said.

‘But the best way for us is to work quietly, try to be organised and improve because we will get better and better and we might be able to win three or four games in a row.

‘You can see the team are organised and I am proud of what they are doing.

‘We are happy about that, but it is not just a question of belief. It is about a lot of things.

‘If it was about belief the priest – and we have one here like the other clubs – could tell the players we will win games and stay here (in the Premier League).

‘It is about working hard, progressing and getting better and better in quality.

‘From there you start winning points against a team like Liverpool – who don’t lose in the previous 18 games – and makes us think we are in a good way.’
