Jonny Clayton is ready to let the darts flow in tonight’s European Championships semi-final but insists he will be happy to win ugly.
The Pontyberem thrower made the last four of a PDC major tournament for the third time after a 10-4 win over Dirk van Duijvenbode in Germany.
Clayton will face Gerwyn Price’s conqueror Peter Wright in tonight’s semi in Oberhausen having already guaranteed himself a cheque for £32,000.
“I’m happy to be through but I think I had to win ugly,” said the 46-year-old.
“Dirk didn’t play how he can and I noticed his head dropped but it’s my job to get over the line and I’m happy to have done that.
“All you want is the W next to your name, whether it’s pretty or not.
“I’m still not relaxed up there yet, hopefully that will come and if it does then you will see my darts flow.
“I want to make my family proud of me.”
Clayton struck a crucial break of throw to move 6-4 in front after a scrappy start from both darters.
But from there he restricted his rival to just one more double attempt to run out a clear winner.
Wright, who knocked out world No 2 Price in the previous round, beat Steve West 10-6.
“I don’t think I played well but I’m happy with the win,” said Wright.
“I like playing Jonny, he’s an amazing guy and he’s a quality player.
“The only way I think I won’t win the trophy is if I miss doubles, so I need to sharpen up on that.”
