Manager Michael Flynn’s Anniversary – One Year And 57 Matches Into His Newport County Reign

Welshman Michael Flynn has had an eventful first year in charge of his home city club Newport County.

He took over exactly a year ago and has been manager at Rodney Parade for 57 matches and they travel to play Yeovil Town in a League Two fixture tomorrow.

Flynn led his Exiles away from relegation danger last season, sealing their League Two great escape in their last match and launching a drive towards the play-offs in this campaign.

They have 11 League Two fixtures left, seven of them at home, and are intent on a big finish to the season.

County earned more than £1m an FA Cup run which ended against Spurs at Wembley Stadium and Flynn says: “It’s been an unbelievable year with the progress we’ve made on and off the pitch.

“Players, staff and board. It has been phenomenal, a massive achievement I am extremely proud of.

“I’m almost 60 games in now and you learn something from every one of them.”

Flynn has earned 23 wins and 15 draws since being appointed, while Newport have suffered 19 defeats.

They are over-achieving under Flynn’s leadership and he says: “It’s been a good experience. I have Lennie Lawrence and Wayne Hatswell and they are quality operators at any level.

“It has been interesting the way I’ve had to deal with media excitement, board meetings and everyday dealings with the fans. Every aspect has been new.

“A lot of good things have happened this year and I’m hoping the next year is even more successful.

“I want to bring stability to this club and keep improving it on and off the pitch.

“You need time and support for that, support from fans, staff, players and the board.

“Thankfully I’m getting that and hopefully we will keep going in the right direction.”

Joss Labadie returns to the Newport starting line-up for the match at Yeovil after completing his suspension and he will regain the captaincy.

Mark O’Brien wore the armband during the 3-3 draw against Forest Green Rovers at home, but he is rated doubtful because of injury.

County will also give Frank Nouble, Robbie Willmott and David Pipe late fitness tests.

Nouble looks likely to sit out for a second match after missing the clash with Rovers.

“He’s got a bit of a stiff groin,” said Flynn. “I could have put him on the bench in midweek, but his partner’s expecting a child so I just thought it was for the best that he was on hand for his wife.

“Something else I’ve got to take into consideration is that he’s yellow one card away from a two-game ban and that threat ends after Saturday.

“I might have to take it on the chin and he might miss Saturday to avoid missing two.”

County are without a win in their last seven league fixtures and are 13th, eight points outside the play-off positions.

Nouble could miss Saturday’s trip to Yeovil with his wife expected to give birth, the striker having made more starts for Newport since his arrival in the summer than any of his previous 14 clubs in British football.

“I’ve spoken to Frank and it’s ongoing,” said Flynn, who celebrates a year in charge of his hometown club this week.

“But with everything going on, with a baby on the way, I don’t think it’s fair to pressurise him in any way.”

Newport County, possible: Day, Pipe, White, Tozer, Demetriou, Butler, Willmott, Dolan, Labadie, Amond, Hayes.
