Martyrs Joint Top After AwayDay Joy For Tom

Tom Meechan headed Merthyr Town’s winner in their 1-0 EvoStik Southern League Premier away win at Farnborough in Hampshire.

The former Newport County striker headed in from close range after 56 minutes after a well worked Merthyr move.

Ian Traylor, usually clinical in front of goal, could have made it 2-0 five minutes later, but he fired over from a penalty.

Farnborough were rocked when they had Michael Fernandes sent off for a second bookable offence after 76 minutes and the visitors eased to victory.

Merthyr, who are joint top on 10 points from four matches alongside Tiverton and Weymouth, now play Frome Town at the MetCoaches Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).

Ashley Evans and Kerry Morgan both went close from volleys, but former Chelsea and Newport County goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley kept them out.

Farnborough hit a post and spurned another big chance, leaving the Martyrs to earn all three points.
