Martyrs Head Home For Crucial Southern League Clash

Merthyr Town aim to put their Southern League season back when they play Stratford Town at the Loadlok Community Stadium tonight (Tuesday, 7.45pm).

The Martyrs have lost four of their last five Premier Division matches, but they are still within touching distance of clubs battling for play-off places.

Manager Gavin Williams and his team produced a competitive performance at Hitchin Town, but the Hertfordshire club emerged 2-0 winners.

Merthyr now need to step up their challenge with a home win.

They have been produced solid team performances in their last two fixtures, being edged out by Weymouth away 3-2 and then Hitchin.

Kyle Copp missed a second half penalty when Hitchin were a goal ahead and the home team snatched a late second.

It was a game that neither team really deserved to win and a draw would have been a fair result in a scrappy game due to the poor weather conditions.

Stratford visit Merthyr Town this evening and they have hit an improved run of form, scoring 13 goals in their last three matches. Two of those were victories, while Stratford drew 1-1 against Royston in their last fixture.

Strikers Jazz Luckie, Mike Taylor, Edwin Ahenkorah and Justin Marsden have all been among the goals.

But manager Adams stressed they need to show they can keep producing their best game after game, week after week.

“We have only really had two bad games all season,” said manager Carl Adams.

“I keep telling people that we have played a lot of big teams already and some really tough away games are out of the way.

“We need to put a run together, play with confidence and if we do that we are not going to be far away from a top 10 team. That’s what I want.

“The confidence can’t always come from me. It has to come from within the players themselves and that’s what I’m trying to get them to understand.

“They have got to lift each other because sometimes I need lifting too.”
