Shaun Edwards Mystery Deepens As Wales Wait For Decision

Shaun Edwards has revealed he has still not decided on a return to Wigan – increasing the possibility he could yet remain with Wales.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young is also very keen to take on Edwards, who is in demand despite his claim during the Six Nations that he would be unemployed after the World Cup.

The Wales defence coach was unveiled as Super League champions Wigan’s next head coach from 2020 last August, with another former player, Adrian Lam, holding the fort until then following the departure of Shaun Wane.

In the immediate aftermath of Wales’ Six Nations Grand Slam triumph, Edwards revealed he had not signed a contract with Wigan, prompting Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Martyn Phillips to claim he would hold talks.

That came in spite of Wayne Pivac’s selection of Byron Hayward to be his defence coach when Pivac takes charge of Wales in the autumn.

No announcement on Hayward’s move from the Scarlets has been made and now Edwards has deepened the intrigue by admitting: “I’ve not made my mind up about anything yet, to be honest.

“Obviously it’s been a very busy time with the Six Nations. I haven’t made my mind where I’m going yet.”

“There’s moving your family obviously and kids being in school and stuff like that,” he added. “So there’s a lot of things to consider.”

In March, Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan issued a statement blaming himself for the confusion and said he agreed to a request from Edwards for more time to consider his future.

Lenagan says he will not hold Edwards to his “oral agreement” if he opts to pursue another job and Wigan are being linked with a move for former Australia international Trent Barrett, who played 60 games for Wigan from 2007-08.

Leicester are also thought to be keen in hiring Edwards, while he himself has talked about the appeal of working for the RFU in the England set-up, which is close to his west London home.
