Steve’s Treble Strike Leads Wellmen To Alliance Victory

Holywell Town caused a stir by earning a 4-1 Huws Gray Alliance win at title-chasing Airbus UK Broughton.

“What a result and performance that was – loved it,” said Town captain Steve Thomas.

Steve Lewis led the way with a hat-trick in Holywell’s best team performance for a long time.

Manager John Haseldin said, “That’s a Holywell performance to be proud of. The boys were outstanding and now we have to maintain standards high and kick on now.”

The Wellmen started brightly with Brady McGilloway and Sam Jones causing problems for the Airbus back four. Jones was involved in their first goal after five minutes.

Jones ran down the left and cut inside into the box before his low cross into the danger area was beaten away by the goalkeeper. Lewis was in the right place to fire high into the net.

Airbus equalised after 25 minutes when Leo Riley controlled well before firing into the top corner past goalkeeper Shaun Pearson.

Town still created chances and added their second with 10 minutes left in the first half.

Lewis took possession close to halfway and his powerful run saw him beat the challenge of a defender, and he ran into the box before shooting.

The advancing keeper manager to get a touch and the ball looped into the air and went into goal.

Holywell led 2-1 at half-time and added their third goal after 50 minutes when Sam Jones fired home a penalty after Jon Jones had been fouled.

The Wellmen continued to press looking for more goals defended solidly when Airbus attacked.

Holywell added a fourth in injury time when Lewis completed his hat-trick, firing past Andy Coughlin to cap a great team performance. It could easily have been more than four goals with Town hitting the bar twice.

The Wellmen play Holyhead Hotspur at Halkyn Road next Saturday in a re-arranged game.

Alliance leaders Caernarfon Town were without a game and Airbus Broughton missed the chance to close the gap at the top.

Denbigh Town jumped above Airbus into second place after a hard fought 3-2 home win against Caersws.

Kristian Pierce opened the scoring for Town from a penalty spot after 15 minutes and Warren Duckett made it two nine minutes later.

Cws had the chance to reduce the deficit, but Elliot Jones had his spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Jon Hill-Dunt.

Steve Blenkinsop did find the net for Caersws only for Duckett to make it 3-1 with a goal from 20 yards.

Both sides had chances in the second half, but only former Aberystwyth and Barry Town player Luke Sherbon managed to convert to keep Cws in the game.

Denbigh held on to take the points that moved them into second place in the table

A Matt Williams own goal gave Guilsfield the half-time advantage against visitors FC Queens Park.

Chris Cathrall netted a second for the Guils after 59 minutes. Park never gave up and reduced the deficit with a penalty from Shane Cartright 10 minutes from time, but could not find a way through the Guils defence again and returned home empty handed

Rhyl extended their good run of results at home against Holyhead Hotspur.

During an evenly matched first half they led 3-2 at the break. Alex Titchener, Phil Marsh and Tom Rowlands were on target for Rhyl, while Dewi Thomas netted two for Hotspur.

Tony Davies and Steward Carroll added goals for Rhyl in the second half to complete a 5-2 win and move them move into fifth place.

Gresford Athletic led 2-0 at half-time against Flint Town United thanks to goals from Jack Jones and Obi Anotuo.

Flint took the game to Gresford in the second half, but could only score through Ieuan Hewitt 10 minutes from time and suffered a 2-1 defeat.

Llandudno Junction collected their second point of the season, but had to come from behind at home to Penrhyncoch to draw 1-1.

Owain James scored first for Penrhyn with Dean Segar equalising for Junction after 65 minutes

Porthmadog led 2-1 at half-time against Ruthin away and all three goals came in a four minute spell.

Sion Bradley gave Porth the lead with Llyr Morris equalising from a penalty within 60 seconds.

Ceri James restored Porth’s lead three minutes later, while Morris, the league’s leading scorer with 17 goals, had the last say with a 90th minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw.
