Matt Richards has become the second fastest British man of all time over 50m. The 19-year-old Team Wales Commonwealth Games star smashed his own personal best when he won the 50m freestyle at the 2022 Swim England Winter Championships on Friday night. Richards – Olympic Gold medal winner last year in the men's 4 × 200 metre freestyle relay in Tokyo – won his 50m sprint event, with Welsh star Medi Harris also taking gold in the women’s 50m backstroke.
New Commonwealth Games Wales chief executive Rebecca Edwards-Symmons says she is keen to build on the legacy of predecessor Chris Jenkins. Edwards-Symmons – a former head of commercial at Swansea City – has been appointed chief executive following the retirement of Chris Jenkins after Birmingham 2022. Jenkins had been CGW chief executive for 17 years, while several current Board members' terms are due to end during the build up to the next Games in Victoria, Australia, in 2026.
Huw Taylor believes the Dragons will pull off one of their greatest ever victories if they can storm the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. The England-born flanker will be part of a Dragons outfit who will bid to topple the URC champions in Port Elizabeth in a match that is live on S4C. The Welsh region gave a good account of themselves in a 33-25 defeat to the Lions last week in the first of their three matches in South Africa.
Former Wales forward Alix Popham believes rugby is still not dealing with the problem of head injuries – and fears a generation of young players are going to ignore the sport. Popham, who won 33 caps between 2003 and 2008 and played in two World Cups, was diagnosed two years ago with probable chronic traumatic encephalopathy at the age of just 40. He says the rugby authorities are "not learning" from the ongoing experience of players and studies linking rugby to brain injury.
Welsh women’s artistic gymnasts Ruby Evans and Evie Flage-Donovan brought the curtain down on their junior careers in style with yet more medal success to cap a sensational year. The Clwb Cymru Caerdydd duo, who are both 15, travelled to Belgium last weekend to represent Great Britain at the 24th edition of prestigious junior women’s competition Top Gym – in what would be their final outing of 2022 and their last as junior gymnasts before they turn senior next year.
Connor Roberts insists the future for Wales is still bright - whatever happens to the older generation of stars for whom the World Cup could be a final curtain call. The Wales defender claims the current crop of Wales players under the age of 30 can continue to ensure the nation regularly qualifies for the finals of major tournaments. The futures of Gareth Bale, 33, Aaron Ramsey, 32 this month, Joe Allen, 32, and 35-year-old Wayne Hennessey have been under the spotlight since Wales finished bottom of Group B in Qatar, with a single point from one draw and two defeats.
Gareth Bale & co may have been dominating the hearts and minds of Welsh sports fans with their efforts in Qatar, but Cardiff City will grab the limelight on Wednesday night when the club hosts a special tribute match to honour one of their all-time greats. Peter Whittingham was at the heart of everything that was good about the Bluebirds for more than a decade, a period during which the club reached a League Cup final, a Play-off Final, an FA Cup Final and, finally, the promised land of the Premier League. His achievements and statistics – 96 goals in 457 games – will stand the test of time, especially in the ultra-professional modern era.
