Top Welsh Trio Head For Aberdovey And Amateur Championships

Three members of Wales’ European Nations Cup winning team will be at Aberdovey at the end of July to contest this year’s Welsh Amateur Championship.

Jack Davidson, Owen Edwards and Joshua Davies all head a strong field which includes defending champion Zach Galliford, 2014 winner Evan Griffith and fellow Welsh Internationals Lee Jones, Ben Chamberlain, Tim Harry and Tom Williams.

Richard Dixon, chief executive of the Golf Union of Wales, said: “The top of the men’s game in Wales is stronger than it has been for many years as highlighted by some great results this season.

“I am delighted to see so many of our best players competing in this year’s Welsh Amateur Championship at one of the best courses in Wales. It is all set up for an exciting week of golf.”

This is the tenth time the Welsh Amateur will have been played at Aberdovey, which was the original host of the championship in its first recorded playing in 1895.

David Wilson, championship manager for the GUW, added: “This is a tremendous event.

“With only 32 players going through from the stroke play qualifying to the match play stage, the players are under real pressure to perform well from the start.

“Once in to the match play anything can happen and the course lends itself ideally to some exciting games.”

Aberdovey is no stranger to hosting top level amateur events. In addition to hosting the Welsh Amateur on a number of occasions, it is the home of the Welsh Seniors Championship and will be hosting the Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play Championship in 2018.

Aberdovey Golf Club manager Gareth Pritchard said: “We very much look forward to welcoming all the competitors to Aberdovey. The course is in superb condition and will provide an ideal challenge for these top level players.”

The stroke play qualifying starts on Monday 31st July with the match play section beginning on Wednesday 2nd August culminating in the 36 hole final on the Friday.

Visitors are welcome to watch some of the best amateur golfers in Wales compete to become the Welsh Amateur Champion for 2017.
