Warnock Signs Up With Martyrs At Penydarren Park

Neil Warnock has joined Merthyr Town’s battle for a healthy and successful future.

The Martyrs have fought against financial problems this season and are looking far more stable going into their final eight EvoStik Southern League fixtures this season.

Their Loadlok Community Stadium – formerly Penydarren Park – will be the venue for ‘An Evening With Neil Warnock’ in the Red Flag Bar on Thursday, April 19, an event which is already sold out.

Cardiff City manager Warnock has plenty of non-League experience, having been in charge of teams at Gainsborough Trinity, Burton Albion and Scarborough at the start of his coaching career.

The Yorkshireman was appointed manager of Trinity in 1980, almost four decades ago, and then moved to Burton Albion, a club who visit Cardiff City Stadium for a Championship clash next Friday.

Warnock moved on to Conference club Scarborough and they won the title in 1987, making them the first team to win  automatic promotion to the Football League following the abolition of the re-election system.

The Bluebirds have five Championship fixtures between now and Warnock’s visit to Merthyr Town FC and by then there will be a far clearer picture of his club’s promotion chances.

Cardiff will have four matches left in the 2017-18 regular season when Warnock has his evening with the Martyrs.

Merthyr Town have another big event on Bank Holiday Monday, April 2 when they welcome former players to their match against Frome Town.

The game has been selected for an Ex-players day and all former Martyrs’ players are welcome to attend.

A club statement said: “We celebrate Ex-players day on April 2 by welcoming past players to the club, those who helped to set the standards the current day club hopes to live up to.

“Players from past seasons who achieved numerous accolades for the club, league & cup wins, individual success, becoming legends at the club.

This event was originally planned in March, but due to storm Emma (the beast from the east) it has been rescheduled this for Bank Holiday Monday.”

Manager Gavin Williams and his Merthyr Town team are at Biggleswade Town in the EvoStik Southern League this afternoon.
