Wilfried Bony Is Ready To Rock, Says Paul Clement

Paul Clement is convinced Wilfried Bony can again be the rock on which Swansea City can build success Premier League success.

The Ivorian striker is set to make his Swans debut for the second time against Newcastle United on Sunday, following his £12m deadline day return from Manchester City.

Bony became a folk hero to Swansea fans in his first spell at the club, not only for his 34 goals in 70 games, but also for his effortless power and strength on the field.

Former manager Garry Monk once revealed that Bony had broken Monk’s finger simply by standing still when the defender had tried to push him away during a training session.

Current boss Clement says: “I have seen a few defenders try and get contact on him and he does not move. They just bounce off him.

“He has soft feet too, a good touch and that is such a good quality. He can hold people off, but is good enough to link up with his team-mates.

“There is a lot of positive energy with him when he walks around the place – his relationships with his team-mates and the staff. He has real personality and when he walks into the dressing room he can hold the room.

“He is a very good player, he is so strong. He has good feet and good touch and you understand why a club like Manchester City took him.”

Clement must now find a method and a blend that harnesses the talents of Bony, Tammy Abraham and Jordan Ayew, as well as Renato Sanches – the midfielder who will train with the club for the first time on Friday after his loan move from Bayern Munich.

Clement knows it will require his team to adapt from the previous focal points of the Fernando Llorente and Tammy Abraham era, but is confident his front three players can offer a workable alternative.

“I am delighted with the blend of the three. They are all different. Tammy is a goalscorer who has good instincts for where he needs to be when the ball is around the goal. He likes to attack the back of defences.

“Wilfried is a goalscorer but he is brilliant with his back to goal and he will really help us link the play.

“Jordan has that bit of everything. He can come deep to collect the ball, he can run with it and gives so much for the team. We have a real nice blend of qualities.

Sanches must merit his Swansea place as Clement has revealed there is no deal with Bayern to guarantee the Portugal star game time.

Bayern signed Sanches from Benfica for 35million euros in May 2016, but agreed to send the 20-year-old out on loan after he made just 26 appearances last season.

Chelsea, Juventus, Liverpool and Monaco were all linked with permanent moves for the midfielder, but Bayern were only keen on a loan arrangement and Clement, their former assistant coach, used his connections in Bavaria to complete the deal.

“My initial call went into Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the CEO at Bayern,” Clement said.

“I worded it that ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’ and it looked like it would be very difficult to do.

“I was delighted to get it over the over the line, but there are no guarantees that Renato has to play – and Bayern are of the same view.

“He has to merit getting in to the side. That is how it should be.

“I am happy with that arrangement, but at the same time I have brought him here to contribute.”

Clement confirmed that Sanches will be involved against Newcastle but, while he is set to start, Bony is likely to be on the bench.

“We’ll check Renato over when he comes in, but I have no reason to believe there are any problems.

“He played 70 minutes the other night for Portugal Under-21s and when I knew him at Bayern he was always in good physical shape.

“The decision in him coming here was that he could possibly go to another big European club and end up in the same situation where he is playing 40 or 50 per cent of the games.

“So we all came to the decision that this would be a good destination for him.

“But he’s still a young player so we have to be careful not to put loads of pressure and expectation on him.

“He is a foreign player coming to a new league and this is a very demanding league.”
