Bala edge past Newtown to remain 100 per cent at home [Newtown AFC]

WPL Weekend Scoreboard: Barry Town Climb Into Third, Bala Town March On

Barry Town were able to close the gap on the top-two in the JD Welsh Premier League with Connah’s Quay and The New Saints not in action this weekend.

The Dragons move up into third in the table, level on points with The New Saints, following Chris Hugh’s solitary strike against Carmarthen Town at Jenner Park.

A well-constructed Barry Town attack saw them build from deep inside their own half before Momodou Touray rolled off his marker in the centre circle to feed the ball wide into the path of the marauding Hugh, who sent a well-struck low finish across an outstretched Lee Idzi.

Bala Town extended their 100 per cent home record with an eventful win over Newtown.

The Lakesiders were pegged back twice by in-form Newtown, who were searching for a fourth straight league win, before Joe Kenton had the misfortune of turning the ball into his own net deep into added time.

Chris Venables scored twice to take his tally to five in six games this season. The goalscoring midfielder completed his brace from the penalty spot to regain Bala’s lead after Steve Leslie had converted from the spot for Newtown shortly after the restart.

Despite being down to 10-men after Craig Williams was booked twice, Newtown held on with Bala firmly in control and the game was turned with six minutes remaining, when Luke Boundford replied for the Robins against the run of play.

Bala again ramped up the pressure and their perseverance paid off with Henry Jones’ cross finding its way in via Kenton.

Eliot Evans grabbed his fourth WPL goal of the season with an 88th-minute curling free-kick that secured Cardiff Met a 2-0 win over Llanelli and a place back in the top-six.

Harri Owen put the Met ahead late in the second-half and Llanelli’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Scott Tancock saw red.

Caernarfon dropped out of the top-half after a goalless draw against Aberystwyth at Park Avenue.
