Bluebirds Waiting In Final For Swans or Nomads

Cardiff City must wait to find out who they play in the FAW Youth Cup Final.

The young Bluebirds powered into the final thanks to a 6-0 win against Airbus UK Broughton in their semi-final at Newtown’s Latham Park.

Holders Swansea City and Connah’s Quay Nomads were due to play the second semi-final at Newtown on Sunday, but that tie fell victim to the weather and just be rearranged.

Four goals in eight minutes towards the end of the first half gave Devils the big grip on their match against Airbus, who had been defending solidly.

Up to that point City had missed a couple of half chances. James Waite volleyed over early on, while Lawrence Wootton had a close range header well saved by David Szczepanial in the Airbus goal.

City captain Jack Bodenham thought he had opened the scoring after 10 minutes only for the referee to disallow the goal for a foul.

Nine minutes later Airbus fashioned a chance of their own as Alfie McNichollas found space down the right, but he couldn’t get the ball under control before shooting and sent his effort well wide.

City kept pushing and eventually opened the scoring on 35 minutes when Mark Harris dinked the ball home after Szczepanial parried a cross from Bodenham in his direction.

That opened the way for three more goals before the break. Sion Spence cut through the Airbus defence to fire home from the edge of the box and Sam Bowen scored two in a minute.

His first was from 23 yards when the forward dragged the ball back nicely before firing low into goal Bowen then headed in after Spence flicked a dangerous cross into his path.

Keenan Patten made it 5-0 when he scored from 20 yards before Wootton rounded the scoring off on 69 minutes to send City through to next month’s final.

The second semi-final between Swansea and Nomads will now be rearranged.Cardiff City: Ratcliffe, Reynolds, Young, Bodenham, Coxe (Margetson 80), Patten, Wootton (J Davies 84), Waite, Harris (I Davies 56), Spence, Bowen. Subs: J Davies, Burwood, C. Davies, I. Davies, Margetson.
