Wales, in red, faced another tough game after opening draw with England

Gareth Furlong Strikes Again As Wales Suffer Spanish Defeat

Wales 1 Spain 5

Gareth Furlong bagged his second goal of the Belfius EuroHockey Championships as Wales lost to Spain in Antwerp.

The Surbiton HC defender followed up his strike in the 2-2 draw with England on the opening day.

But Spain, ranked ninth in the world – 16 places higher than Zak Jones squad – proved too strong as they recovered from defeat to hosts Belgium in the opening game.

Alvaro Iglesias and Pau Quemada scored in the opening quarter to put the Spanish into a comfortable lead.

Vincenc Ruiz and Josep Romeu added further goals before Furlong netted from a penalty corner on 42 minutes.

But Quemada’s second sealed victory and kept Spain in with a chance of the semi-finals going into their final group game against England.

Wales, who had battled hard to claim the superb draw against England just 24 hours earlier, have a rest day before their final group game against world champions Belgium on Tuesday.
