Wales' top judoka Natalie Powell had to settle for seventh place at the European Games in Minsk as she missed out on a fourth straight medal. The 28-year-old won her second round contest in the -78kg category against Russia's Russia's Antonina Shmeleva having been handed a first round bye.
Evan Hoyt’s dream of playing in the men’s singles at Wimbledon this year is over. Wales’ number one lost in straight sets to Brazil’s Rogerio Dutra Silva in the opening round of qualifying at Roehampton. But it was a desperately close battle which went against 24-year-old Hoyt as he lost 7-6, 7-6 to the world No.223 – a ranking almost 200 places above the Llanelli-born player.
The road to winning the most cherished title in world golf starts today as 13 courses around the UK and Ireland host more than 1,400 wannabee Open champions as Regional Qualifying for the 148th Open at Royal Portrush begins. The players are all competing for a spot in the Final Qualifying rounds before the main event starts on 14-21 July. There are 41 Welsh players in action, all dreaming of staying on course for a ticket to Portrush.
Builth Wells champion rally driver Jason Pritchard will contest his home forestry event, the Nicky Grist Stages, for the first time on Saturday 13 July in his North Road Garage-backed Ford Escort RS1800. Having won the MSA British Historic Rally Championship title for a record three times in a row (2015, ’16 and ’17), this will be the first time that Pritchard has competed against the Historic crews in the Jordan Road Surfacing BTRDA Rally Series. So competitive is the Historic section this year that class leader George Lepley (Hillman Avenger) is also lying third in the overall BTRDA Series drivers’ points table! Co-driven by Phil Clarke, Pritchard is contesting the Nicky Grist Stages as part of his on-going preparations for another attempt at this winter’s Roger Albert Clark Rally. He’s done that event twice before, and after a broken half-shaft ruined a one minute lead, the talented 31-year old driver is aiming to win the November classic for the first time this year.
Ben Pritchard has paid tribute to his Great Britain rival Andy Houghton after beating him to a bronze medal at the second World Rowing Cup regatta in Poland. The Welsh para-rower finished third in Poznan – one place ahead of Houghton in the PR1 single - to continue his rapid rise through the sport. Former triathlete Pritchard, from Swansea, had beaten Houghton to a medal when he took bronze in Italy earlier this month and he repeated the trick in Poland.
Wales and Great Britain discus international James Tomlinson clinched automatic selection for next month's European Under-20 Championships in Sweden at Bedford on Sunday. The Pembrokeshire athlete took gold at the England Athletics Under-20/U-23 Championships and European trials with a throw of 56.93m to retain his title.
Wales were beaten by England in the first game of the 2019 Student Four Nations in Edinburgh on Sunday, thanks to a solid second half from the holders. Wales were 22-10 down at half-time with the game still in the balance, but England came storming out of the traps after the break and quickly sealed the win.
Matt Clowes powered to his ninth win of the year as he defended his JCP Swansea Half Marathon title as Tracy Barlow retained her women's crown. The Cardiff AC runner produced another impressive display on Sunday stopping the clock in 65:49 just over a minute shy of his 64:44 course record from last year.
